Premessa
L'ormai ben nota "battaglia dei convogli" coinvolse gli schieramenti del secondo conflitto mondiale in altre vicende non strettamente legate all'attraversamento del mar Mediterraneo.
Una di esse fù l'attacco della flotta aeronavale Inglese nel NS porto di Taranto, nella tarda serata dell' 11 Novembre del 1940.
Nel settembre del 1940, mediante l'operazione "Hats", la porterei Illustrious giunse nel porto di Alessandria. Il Comandante dell' unità, il Contrammiraglio Lyster, pose subito le basi con Cunningham per l'operazione contro la flotta Italiana: iniziarono dunque le ricognizioni da Malta sul porto di Taranto, vennero addestrati i piloti per l'attacco notturno e, agli inizi del mese di Ottobre, erano pronte anche le foto delle unità in rada.

"Tutti i fagiani sono nel nido"

Questa la frase di Cunningham quando, nel tardo pomeriggio dell'11 novembre, i ricognitori britannici segnalarono la presenza di praticamente tutta la flotta: vi erano infatti raggruppate 6 Navi da Guerra (Cavour,Doria,Duilio,Vittorio Veneto Littorio e Giulio Cesare),3 incrociatori (Gorizia,Zara,Fiume) e vicino le banchine altri 4 incrociatori (Trento, Bolzano, Duca degli Abruzzi e Garibaldi).



L' attacco

Alle ore 20.30 la portaerei Illustrious raggiunse il luogo da dove sarebbe iniziato l'attacco.
Alle 20.40 decollarono i primi 12 velivoli che diedero vita alla prima delle due ondate previste.
Alle 22.50 l'allarme aereo, le batterie di contraerea aprirono il fuoco mentre vennero lanciati dai velivoli inglesi i bengala per illuminare il cielo e per attirare il fuoco.
Alle 23.14 il primo swordfish lanciò il siluro: riesce a colpire a prua la Cavour ma venne abbattuto.
Pochi secondi dopo arrivarono gli altri aerei:
Due siluri centrarono la Littorio a prua e a poppa.
La Doria e la Vittorio Veneto non vennero colpite: i siluri non andarono a segno.
Ore 23.50,la seconda ondata.
Successivamente ai bengala la Littorio venne colpita da un terzo siluro, mentre la Duilio silurata a prora di dritta. La Vittorio Veneto riuscì ad abbattere un velivolo e un secondo, successivo, lanciò a vuoto.
Nel secondo attacco la Nave Trento e il caccia Libeccio vennero colpite da alcune cariche che non esplosero.



L'esito

La Cavour ebbe uno squarcio di dodici metri: semi affondata, emergono pennoni e calibri principali.
La Littorio e la Duilio vennero fatte incagliare.


I motivi del successo.

Sicuramente le difese del porto di Taranto risultarono inadeguate.

Le reti di protezione coprivano circa 4000 metri su 18000 necessari(ritenuti tali), avevano una profondità di 10 metri ed erano troppo distanti dalle Navi;
Le batterie antiaeree si rendevano visibili con le vampe;
Il forte vento aveva disormeggiato i palloni frenati;
I proiettori non vennero attivati.

La missione è riprodotta per 4 giocatori con sub IXB 1940.
L'Iride e l'Otaria hanno obiettivi e posizioni differenti dal Guglielmotti e Tazzoli, come specificato di seguito.

Foreword
The now well-known "battle of the convoys" involved sides of World War II in other events not strictly related to crossing the Mediterranean Sea.
One was the attack of the English air fleet in the harbour of Taranto, in the late evening of November 11, 1940.
In September 1940, through the operation "Hats", the aircraft carrier Illustrious, arrived in the port of Alexandria. The Commander 's unit, the Admiral Lyster, immediately put the bases with Cunningham for the operation against the Italian fleet: it began reconnaissance from Malta on the harbour of Taranto, the pilots were trained to attack at night and in early month of October, also the photos were ready of units in the harbor.

"All the pheasants are in the nest"
This is Cunningham's sentence when, in the late afternoon of 11 November, the British scouts signaled the presence of virtually the entire fleet, there were indeed grouped 6 warships (Cavour, Doria, Duilio, Vittorio Veneto Littorio and Giulio Caesar) 3 cruisers (Gorizia, Zara, Fiume) and near the docks 4 other cruisers (Trento, Bolzano, Duca degli Abruzzi and Garibaldi).



Attack
At 20.30 the aircraft carrier Illustrious reached the place from where it started the attack.
Took off at 20.40 the first 12 aircraft that formed the first of two waves planned.
At 22.50 the air raid, the anti-aircraft batteries opened fire while they were launched by British aircraft flares to illuminate the sky and to draw fire.
At 23:14 the first launched torpedo by the Swordfish hit the bow but the airplane was shot down.
Seconds later came the other aircraft:
Two torpedoes hit the Littorio fore and aft.
The Vittorio Veneto Doria were not affected: the torpedoes did not go to the sign.
23:50, the second wave.
Later the Bengal,the Littorio was hit by a third torpedo, while Duilio torpedoed in the bow to starboard. The Vittorio Veneto was able to shoot down an airplane and a second later, the airplane threw a vacuum.
In the second attack the ship Trento and the destroyer Libeccio were hit by some offices that failed to explode.



The outcome
The Cavour was a glimpse of twelve meters, half-sunk emerge spars and the main gauges.
The Littorio and Duilio were put aground.


The reasons for success.
Certainly the defense of the port of Taranto was inadequate.

Safety nets covering approximately 4000 meters on 18,000 needed (considered such), had a depth of 10 meters and were too distant from Ships;
The anti-aircraft batteries are made visible with the flames;
The strong wind had unmooring the balloons;
The headlights were not activated.

The mission is played by 4 players with sub IXB 1940.
The IRIDE and OTARIA objectives and have different positions from GUGLIELMOTTI and TAZZOLI, as specified below.

Ero sul Tazzoli e furtivamente mi sono avvicinato alla task-force ...a 3500 ho tirato
sulla Carrier ed alla fine con 4 siluri e' affondata .
Proporrei di inserirla nel torneo come missione aggiuntiva, visto che manca quasi 1 mese e mezzo alla fine.

Essendo una Missione per 4 Sub forse in questo momento risulta diffiicle giocarla in 4(ma non impossibile) dato che siamo impegnati con l'VIII° Ciclo.
Comunque sarà inserita(e non sarà la sola) nel Prossimo Ciclo così da godere appieno il Grande Lavoro del C.te Forni.
