Inquadramento storico

Siamo nell'estate del 1942, la II Guerra Mondiale è in pieno svolgimento e vive il suo momento più importante.
La Germania di HITLER è impegnata nell'"Operazione BARBAROSSA", che doveva determinare l'occupazione della Russia mediante la politica bellica del III REICH: il BLITZKRIEG.
L'operazione risulta molto più impegnativa e il dispendio di forze è altissimo: mancano pochi mesi all'inverno, quell'inverno che deciderà con la "sacca di Stalingrado" la controffensiva dell'Armata Rossa.
Nel vivacissimo carteggio Stalin-Churchill, i Russi reclamano l'apertura di un altro fronte europeo per limitare il potenziale offensivo della Germania, i Britannici dal canto loro, credono fermamente che la Guerra ha la sua leva nel Mediterraneo e il primo obiettivo deve essere la sua messa in sicurezza.
Churchill riesce ad imporre il suo punto di vista e decide il rafforzamento della VII ARMATA di MONTGOMERY: decisivo l'annientamento dell' AFRIKA KORPS e decisiva la riconquista della Libia.
ROMMEL dal canto suo comincia a soffrire, i rifornimenti mediterranei vengono continuamente dimmezzati e le risorse per superare El Alamein sono limitate.
In aggiunta le forze Alleate hanno pianificato gli sbarchi in Algeria e in Marocco, per poi aprire un fronte contro il Federmaresciallo Tedesco nell'Africa occidentale: "l'Operazione TORCH" ha il suo inizio.
ROOSVELT infatti, riesce a contenere l'offensiva dei Giapponesi e nella seconda metà del 1942 può dedicarsi al maggiore sovvenzionamento delle truppe Inglesi.
La situazione nel mediterraneo diventa caldissima.
"L'OPERAZIONE C3" (conquista di Malta da parte delle forze dell'Asse), nonostante le pressioni MUSSOLINI, viene rimandata a settembre a favore del continuo e incessante rifornimento all' AFRIKA KORPS.
Ma l'isola di Malta è già in mano Alleata e i continui attacchi aerei dell'Asse non riescono a limitare la sua opposizione alla "battaglia dei convogli" nel Mediterraneo.
Churchill nutre forti proccupazioni su Malta: l'isola dimostra di essere il centro nevralgico per la conquista del Mediterraneo e necessita di rinforzi.
Superati gli scontri riguardanti i convogli di rifornimento Inglesi "Harpoon" e "Vigorous" della Battaglia di mezzo giugno, lo scenario si ripete per la Battaglia di mezzo agosto con il convoglio "PEDESTAL".



La situazione della Regia Marina, Kesserling e la Lutwaffe.

I mercantili per l'Africa subiscono gravi perdite... l'avanzata di Rommel rallenta e in Italia si tiene una riunione a Taormina, il 23 luglio 1942.
Si discute della presenza "in toto" delle NS Navi in mediterraneo, ma
la mancanza di carburante costringe la flotta Italiana a non operare.
Kesserling in quella occasione ebbe uno scontro con Fougier (responsabile Aereonautica), lamentando la scarsa aggressività e debole produzione industriale.
Annunciata la presenza di un convoglio Alleato dopo Gibilterra, Kesserling esige il comando delle operazioni della Regia Marina e chiede una mobilitazione in massa per il canale di Sicilia, tattica risultata vincente nella battaglia di Mezzo Giugno.
Per contrastare l'ingente convoglio, il Comando Supremo decide di inviare mezzi leggeri e di avvalersi della Lutwaffe come supporto operativo.
Vengono mobilitati in massa i sommergibili (5 unità dislocate in 60 miglia al largo delle isole Baleari), i MAS e le MS, mentre la 3° DIVISIONE INCROCIATORI (BOLZANO, GORIZIA E TRIESTE) e la 7° DIVISIONE INCROCIATORI (RAIMONDO MONTECUCCOLI, MUZIO ATTENDOLO ed EUGENIO DI SAVOIA) sarebbero entrati in gioco solo il 13 agosto al largo di Pantelleria (in precedenza vennero recuperate delle documentazioni importanti, inerenti le rotte Inglesi di rifornimento).
Supermarina tramite Maricosom posiziona i battelli in due distinte zone: una a sud delle Baleari a cavallo delle possibili direttrici di marcia; la seconda a ponente del Canale di Sicilia.
In attesa delle disposizioni sopracitate, i nostri battelli avevano preso agguato lungo le coste settentrionali tunisine a levante dell'Isola di La Galite : ss.mm.gg. Axum, Velella e Granito.
A sud delle Baleari 5 battelli : Brin (30 miglia a NW di Capo Caxine), Dagabur (Zona adiacente)+ i 3 delle coste tunisine.
In tre zone adiacenti : Ascianghi, Axum, Alagi, Bronzo, Dessiè (Zona A)
Avorio, Cobalto e Granito (Zona B)
Emo, Dandolo e Otaria (Zona C)
Asteria (Zona D)

Il convoglio "PEDESTAL"

Churchill decide di inviare dei rifornimenti i primi di agosto del 1942, è troppo importante limitare gli approvvigionamenti a Rommel ed è troppo importante tenere il controllo del tratto di mare sovraccarico di convogli dell'Asse.
E' la nascita di "PEDESTAL", un convoglio con ingente scorta, salpato da Gibilterra il 10 agosto.
La squadra navale Inglese viene affidata all'ammiraglio Burrough.
Vengono segnalate 38 navi.
Presenti 13 piroscafi: Almeria Lykes, Brisbane Star, Clan Ferguson, Deucalion, Dorset, Empire Hope, Glenorchy, Melburne Star, Port Chalmers, Rochester Castle, Santa Elisa, Waimarama, Wairangi
2 petroliere: Nigeria e Ohio
4 portaerei: Eagle, Furious, Indomitable, Victorious
2 corazzate: Nelson e Rodney

I primi contatti e lo scontro.

11 agosto

Il primo contatto viene fornito dalla CIAF (Commissione Italiana Armistizio con la Francia) da un aereo commerciale in volo per l'Algeria alle 2 dell' 11 agosto, individuando la posizione del convoglio.
Alle 0438 contatto del Smg UARSCIEK in pos. 37.52N 01.48E, tentativo di attacco ad una portaerei.
Rilevazione bersaglio Smg VOLFRAMIO (a levante dell' Uarsciek)
Smg GIADA 70 miglia a ponente prende contatto
Alle 9.30 il sommergibile della Regia Marina UARSCIEK, informa della posizione del convoglio.
Alle 14.50 La portaerei FURIOUS muove 38 unità SPITFIRE verso Malta dirigendo successivamente verso Gibilterra.
Alle 13.15 il sommergibile U-73 affonda in 8 minuti la portaerei EAGLE, lanciando 4 siluri dalla distanza di 400 mt circa, riuscendo ad eludere la scorta di 13 cacciatorpedniere.

12 agosto

Smg DAGABUR più a levante del Giada, prende contatto.
Viene individuato da 4500 mt e successivamente speronato dal cacciatorpediniere WOLVERINE (con a bordo il nuovo radar tipo 271), affondando.
Alle 9.30 dei SUNDERLAND danneggiano il GIADA dopo averlo individuato.
Alle 12.40 una incursione dell'Asse di due ondate non provoca particolari danni ma disperde la formazione del convoglio.
Seguono altre incursioni, che danneggiano la nave da trasporto DEUCALION e la VICTORIOUS.
Alle 17.02 il COBALTO viene colpito da bombe di profondità e costretto ad emergere dal cacciatorpediniere ITHURIEL, che recupera la documentazione di bordo.
Alle 18.30 e successivamente alle 18.35 diversi attacchi degli JU87 e S79 danneggiano la RODNEY, provocano danni fatali al cacciatorpediniere FORESIGHT (autoaffondato il giorno seguente) e danneggiano il ponte e gli elevatori della INDOMITABLE: in seguito ai numerosi incendi, inverte la rotta per rientrare a Gibilterra.
Alle 18.40 le unità maggiori di scorta procedono per il rientro: le unità di prevenzione restano 13 cacciatorpediniere e 4 incrociatori (MANCHESTER, NIGERIA, KENYA e CAIRO).
Tra le 19.30 e le 21.30 gli attacchi aerei al largo delle secche di Kerkennah danneggiano il piroscafo EMPIRE HOPE, incendiano il CLAN FERGUSON e la motonave BRISBANE STAR di 12.750 tonnellate.

12 agosto

La BRISBANE STAR alle 19.30 viene centrata anche da una salva di 4 siluri dal sommergibile DESSIE'.
Alle 19.50 il sommergibile AXUM lancia 4 siluri che colpiscono la petroliera OHIO di 9200 tonnellate, gli incrociatori NIGERIA e CAIRO.
Asportata la poppa, l'incrociatore Cairo viene affondato. L'incrociatore Nigeria viene lasciato libero di rientrare anch'esso a Gibilterra.
Nuovamente le navi del convoglio si disperdono, al successivo attacco aereo (21.15) il DEUCALION affonda.
Alle 21.18 altri quattro siluri, provenienti questa volta dal sommergibile ALAGI, colpiscono il KENYA e la nave da trasporto CLAN FERGUSON di 7347 tonnellate (autoaffondato).
Anche il BRONZO riesce ad ingaggiare affondando l'EMPIRE HOPE di 12668 tonnellate.
I sommergibili Italiani affondano l'incrociatore CAIRO, danneggiano il NIGERIA e il KENYA, colano a picco i mercantili EMPIRE HOPE e CLAN FERGUSON.
La petroliera OHIO e il GLENORCHY riescono a resistere, nonostante i continui attacchi della Lutwaffe.


L'intervento del resto delle forze dell'Asse

il convoglio alleato giunge verso la mezzanotte al largo di Capo Bon, tra Pantelleria e la Tunisia tre schieramenti di MAS e MS lo attendono.
Alle ore 1.07 le MS 16 e 22 colpiscono il MANCHESTER nei pressi della Santa Barbara dei pezzi da 102mm: l'unità viene affondata alle 5.50.
La MS 31 alle 2.15 affonda il piroscafo GLENORCHY con una salva di due siluri.
Alle 3.10 il MAS 552 evita abilmente il fuoco del KENYA e affonda il WAIRANGI.
Alle 3.40 il MAS 554 colpisce l'ALMERIA LYKES, rendendola non governabile.
Alle 4.48 il MAS 557 affonda il SANTA ELIZA e dopo 15 minuti il MAS 564 danneggia il ROCHESTER CASTLE.
I MAS ITALIANI affondano il MANCHESTER e 5 mercantili.
Si susseguono attacchi aerei per diverse ore e la 3° e 7° divisione incrociatori non entrerà mai in gioco.
Nonostante Mussolini non fosse totalmente daccordo, Riccardi decide di far rientrare le divisioni per paura di un attacco notturno per la presenza di unità alleate nel bacino oriantale.
Nonostante la rotta per il rientro, l'ATTENDOLO e il BOLZANO vengono silurati durante la navigazione dal sommergibile UNBROKEN (ULTRA "DOCET"): il classe TRENTO viene messo fuori gioco per il restante tempo del conflitto, il classe CONDOTTIERI perde la prua e sopravive fino al 4 dicembre.
Solo 5 piroscafi raggiungono Malta, che però sbarcano sull’isola 30.000 tonnellate di materiale, l'equivalente di qualche mese di risorse.

NELLA NOTTE TRA L'11 E IL 12 AGOSTO ABBIAMO COMPLESSIVAMENTE INVIATO IN MISSIONE 427 BOMBARDIERI; 220 SONO ANDATI A MAINZ DOVE HANNO PROVOCATO GRANDISSIMI INCENDI E 154 A LE HAVRE. Considerazioni sulla battaglia di mezzo agosto

E' fuor discussione che le battaglie di "mezzo giugno" e "mezzo agosto" furono a favore dell'asse.
Vorrei allinearmi al pensiero di SADKOVICH in merito all'argomento, lasciando le mie considerazioni con un passo scritto da lui:

OPERATION "PEDESTAL"


Historical framework

The convoy "Pedestal"

The first contact and confrontation.

August 11

The first contact is provided by CIAF (Italian Commission for Armistice with France) using a commercial airplane in flight for Algeria at 2 's August 11, identifying the location of the convoy.
At 0438 contact Smg UARSCIEK in pos. 37.52N 01.48E, attempted attack on an aircraft carrier.

Smg Giada 70 miles west into contact
At 9.30 the submarine of the Royal Navy UARSCIEK, informs the position of the convoy.
The aircraft carrier FURIOUS at 14.50 SPITFIRE move 38 units to go afterwards Malta to Gibraltar.
At 13.15 the submarine U-73 sank in 8 minutes, the aircraft carrier EAGLE, 4 launching torpedoes from a distance of 400 meters around, managing to elude the escort of 13 destroyer.

August 12

Smg Dagabur more to the east of Giada , contact.
Is found from 4500 meters and then rammed the destroyer WOLVERINE (carrying the new radar type 271), sinking.
To 9.30 the Giada is damaged by Sunderland after identified.

Between 19:30 and 21:30 the air attacks off the shoals of Kerkennah damage the steamer EMPIRE HOPE, burn the CLAN FERGUSON and the motorboat BRISBANE STAR 12,750 tons.


Submarines AXUM, ALAGI , DESSIE'e BRONZO

August 12

The BRISBANE STAR is centered at 19.30 also by a salvo of 4 torpedoes from the submarine Dessie '.
The submarine launched at 19.50 AXUM 4 torpedoes hit the tanker OHIO 9200 tons, the cruisers NIGERIA and CAIRO.
